Legendary Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Tony Dungy will be the next member of the Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that the twelfth member of their Ring of Honor will be none other than legendary head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Dungy.
Tony Dungy was hired as the head coach in 1996 and he led the Bucs to the postseason in four of his six years, including an appearance in the NFC Championship in 1999. Dungy would finish with a 54-42 record which is good for a .563 winning percentage, the highest of any Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach in franchise history.
Dungy was unceremoniously removed from his position after a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2001 season and is often credited by fans to have built the team Jon Gruden won Super Bowl XXXVII with.
Dungy would move on to coach the Indianapolis Colts where he would go 85-27 as well as becoming the first African-American head coach in NFL history to win the Super Bowl when the Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
Owner and Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer had this to say about the decision to induct coach Dungy;
"“Tony Dungy’s impact on the Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay community is not measured in terms of wins and losses. Tony transformed our entire organization and established a winning culture that set the foundation for the most successful era in our franchise’s history. Through his exceptional leadership, Tony set a new benchmark for excellence on and off the field that we still strive to achieve to this day.”"
