Buccaneers vs. Jaguars Takeaways: Ronald Jones’ struggles continue
By Ryan Doyle
The sixth wideout battle was fun to watch
Typically, the fourth preseason game tends to be a drag. Luckily, for Tampa Bay fans, the battle for the final wide receiver spot made things interesting.
Both Bobo Wilson and Bernard Reedy made a handful of plays as they tried to prove to Koetter and company they belong on the team.
Wilson snagged five catches, had a few excellent returns and a stellar end-around for 21 yards. Reedy also had five catches for 56 yards.
With Watson locked onto the roster, Freddie Martino didn’t take a single snap, which makes him the favorite in the battle. Reedy and Wilson did put on a good show, but it may not have been enough to jump Martino.
Running back depth on display
The smart money is on Shaun Wilson to make the team. However, Dare Ogunbowale is going to be on an NFL roster at some point this season. He has made plays in every preseason contest, and somehow, the Bucs are going to have to hide him on the practice squad.
The former UDFA rushed for 29 yards against Jacksonville and continued to show why he has been one of the biggest surprises in camp. When a player enters the fold as late as he did, it usually means he isn’t a legitimate option.
Ogunbowale has worked his tail off despite the odds being stacked against him. He’s been one of the best stories of August.
Front seven standouts
In the trenches, DaVonte Lambert had another excellent night. He had four total tackles in the trenches. Lambert is a premier practice squad candidate with a talented group of defensive linemen in front of him.
Linebacker Jack Cichy entered the fourth preseason game fighting for a linebacker spot. He made his presence felt with 4 solo tackles, including a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit.
The front seven is undoubtedly the strength of Tampa Bay’s defense. Having quality depth is essential for a group which will carry Mike Smith‘s unit.
