QB Jameis Winston

Jameis Winston threw a wrench into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers plans with his four-game suspension to start the season.

The plan was to see if Winston would take the next step in his development and prove that he is the franchise quarterback the organization has desperately needed.

Tampa relegated Winston to backup quarterback a few weeks ago. Once thought to be the future of the franchise, Winston’s fate is now unclear.

The former number one overall pick was unimpressive during his stint as the starting quarterback. In his four games, Winston threw for 1,181 yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In his fourth year as in the NFL, Winston continued to struggle with turnovers. The offensive line didn’t make life easy for Winston, but even when he had time, he tried to do too much.

According to Pro Football Focus, when Winston had a clean pocket, he tossed six interceptions. Winston’s inability to understand when to throw the ball away has hindered the Tampa Bay offense for years.

Winston’s talent is apparent. He can deliver the ball downfield with ease, escape sacks and throw into tight windows. The consistency hasn’t been there for him so far.

After Ryan Fitzpatrick led the Buccaneers to a 2-0 start, the hope was for Winston to take the reigns and lead Tampa to the postseason. However, the more talented option hasn’t been the better one this season.

With the postseason looking more and more like a pipe dream, the Buccaneers could turn back to Winston to see if he can show signs of improvement. He has the talent and the weapons; he needs to put it all together and fast.
