Kris Richard will interview for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job. He spent 2018 as the defensive play-caller for the Cowboys.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will interview Kris Richard, the defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Tampa Bay will add yet another emerging coach to their list of interviews. Richard already has three meetings lined up. He will meet with the Bucs, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins after the Cowboys Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.

Along with his duties with the Dallas secondary, he was the team’s defensive play-caller. The Cowboys had a top-ten defense in nearly every statistical category this season. America’s Team only allowed 20.6 points per game on their way to a first-place finish in the NFC East. They were a dominant force that carried their inconsistent offense to the postseason.

Before his one season in Dallas, he was the defensive coordinator and DBs coach for the Seahawks. He was the man behind the “Legion of Boom” defense. The Seahawks ranked in the top five in both points and yards allowed in his first two seasons as the DC in Seattle as well.

Tampa Bay boasts a young secondary which Richard could develop into a strength. Last season, only one team allowed more points than the Bucs last season. If Tampa Bay is looking for a culture change, Richard will bring it.

Richard was one of the hottest candidates leading up to Black Monday. His recent success makes him one of the premier candidates for organizations looking for a defensive-minded head coach to lead their team.

Richard accepting an interview with the Bucs is a good sign. Some felt that Tampa Bay wouldn’t be a very appealing job considering its of late, but landing a top candidate like Richard is a huge get.
