5.7 Justin Layne CB Michigan State

A name that is gathering a lot of steam at the moment is the converted receiver to defensive back Justin Layne from Michigan State. Standing at a towering 6’3 and 185 pounds, he has the frame to bulk up a bit and become a great lockdown corner. However, with only two years under his belt as a defensive back, this he needs some more fine tuning to his technique.

With Brent Grimes on his way out the door and the Bucs hoping the door whacks him on his way out and former first rounder Vernon Hargreaves still working to avoid the bust label, the team desperately needs an upgrade at the corner position. With a potential gem in Carlton Davis in last year’s draft the team may have gotten lucky enough to wait until day three to address the position in the draft.

Layne tallied three picks in three seasons with the Spartans, and on tape has shown immense potential high pointing balls (that receiver background playing to his advantage). Again, he is still relatively inexperienced as a defensive back, but with Todd Bowles having an opportunity to work with him, he could develop into a lockdown stud.
