J.J. Nelson

J.J. Nelson seems to be a perfect fit for Tampa Bay at this point in free agency. Playing for the Arizona Cardinals under Bruce Arians, Nelson has familiarity with what the Buccaneers want to do offensively and could fill the void left by Jackson’s departure.

More from Bucs Free Agency

Nelson is a blazing receiver that can directly replace exactly what Jackson was brought to Tampa Bay to do. Not receiving much attention on the open market, the Buccaneers could land Nelson’s services at a discounted cost and bring him back into a familiar situation.

In 2016 Nelson had 34 receptions for 568 yards for an average of 16.7 yards per catch under Arians as a member of the Cardinals. He followed that up with 29 receptions for 508 yards and an average of 17.5 yards per catch. Nelson clearly has the big play ability that Tampa Bay is looking to fill.

In 2018 he had his worst season as a pro, only recording seven catches under an entirely new offensive scheme under offensive coordinator Mike McCoy who was fired mid-season. Due to the lack of production, Nelson’s services will not be expensive to acquire, and he is a prime candidate to have a bounce back season in Tampa Bay.
