It looks as though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have found their backup quarterback to Jameis Winston as they are expected to sign Blaine Gabbert.

Reports are coming out that after being released by the Tennessee Titans just last week, Blaine Gabbert is expected to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gabbert was most recently backup for quarterback Marcus Mariota and even started three games in relief of the often injured Mariota going 2-1 while throwing for 626 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions and completing 60% of his passes.

Gabbert was originally the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars coming out of the University of Missouri. Gabbert had two very successful and productive seasons in Missouri starting as a true sophomore and a junior before electing for the NFL draft.

Gabbert never panned out in Jacksonville going 5-22 in the 27 games he started at QB. In those 27 starts Gabbert totaled 4,357 yards, 22 touchdowns, 24 interceptions, and had an average completion percentage of 52% over three seasons. Gabbert went on to be a backup quarterback to Colin Kaepernick for the San Francisco 49ers before having to start due to injuries ahead of him on the depth chart.

In three seasons as a 49er Gabbert appeared in 15 games while starting 13 of them. In three years in the Bay Area Gabbert threw for 2,994 yards, 16 touchdowns, 13 interceptions and had an average completion percentage of 54% over three seasons.

In 2017 as a backup for Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals under the new head coach of the Bucs Bruce Arians, Gabbert totaled 1,086 yards, 6 touchdowns, 6 interceptions and a completion percentage of 55%.

Although Gabbert’s numbers are not awe inspiring by any means, he is not coming to the Bucs to start but to merely serve as a veteran backup and a guy who has proven to be able to win a game or two in relief of a starter. Gabbert has a familiarity with Arians and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and can help get Winston, Griffin and any potential incoming rookie acclimated to the Arians/Leftwich offense.
