Round 3, Pick 70: Darnell Savage, S Maryland

Savage was a four-year player and three year starter at safety for the Maryland Terrapins and was nothing short of great for the Big Ten team. In fact, the Buccaneers have already scheduled a pre-draft visit with the physical safety. If he is available at the end of day-two of the draft, the Buccaneers will not hesitate to pull the trigger and put Savage in the pewter and red.

Savage totaled nearly 50 tackles in every season as a starter while securing eight interceptions and returning two for touchdowns. In 2018, Savage produced 5.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions, displaying the flexibility to crowd the line of scrimmage as well as play deep in center field; quite the way to end his career for the 5’11 and 200 pound safety.

Savage should find reps early as a rotational safety and a special teamer before carving out a bigger role as a starter down the road, but who knows, in a weak secondary like Tampa Bay’s, Savage could come in and start day one. While Savage is a little undersized for the position he makes up for it with his speed, ball skills and ability to make tackles all over the field that would make him appealing to the Buccaneers here to end day-two of the draft.
