Round 5, Pick 145: Kendall Sheffield, CB, Ohio State

Here in the fifth round, the Buccaneers take another flyer on an extremely athletic cornerback who was injured during the bench press drill at the combine and was unable to complete the rest of the tests. Kendall Sheffield, cornerback from Ohio State, was expected to light the combine on fire, rumored to be able to hit the 4.3 mark in the 40 yard dash. Instead, scouts and general managers can only guess at his ability, and going off of his film, Sheffield does not have the most impressive resume.

The Ohio State defense struggled mightily in 2018, a surprise to the entire nation, and Sheffield was not immune from those struggles. Often looking flat-footed and misplaying the ball in air, he found himself on the losing end of jump balls frequently. However, if the Buccaneers believe he has the athletic ability and tools to mold, a day-three pick would be a wise investment.

Again, Arians has expressed the utmost confidence in 2016 first round pick Hargreaves and last year’s second rounder Davis as his starting corners outside of the numbers, however having an athletic freak to mold as a back up plan would be more than ideal for the Buccaneers. Here in the fifth round they get one in the form of the former Buckeye, Sheffield.
