Day Two: Darnell Savage, Maryland

Darnell Savage is one of the most likely safeties for the Buccaneers to take in the draft. At the 39th pick it is likely that Savage would be available and he has already met with the Bucs on multiple occasions. Despite the fact that Abram is generally the consensus best safety in the draft, Savage has the abilities to be a starter in his first year while also allowing the Buccaneers to draft the likes of Josh Allen on day one.

Savage’s game would be very different from that of Abram’s. For starters, Savage was one of the fastest players in the draft with a 4.36 second 40-yard time. His type of play is one of much more speed and quickness, and Savage definitely has the speed to be an excellent safety. Savage has the ball hawk skills and the athleticism to fix the turnover problems that malign the Buccaneer defense, although he would not be able to stop the run as well as players like Abram. Savage played for the Maryland team that shocked the world by nearly defeating Ohio State, and served as a leader. His stats back this up as he had 4 interceptions 52 total tackles in his final season.

Between his style of play, where he falls in the draft, and the picks that the Bucs have in hand, Savage may make the most sense of all of the safeties in the draft for the Bucs to take. Savage could be a consistent player and advance his game greatly under Todd Bowles’ coaching. Savage is a second day player who has massive upside and could take some of the pressure off of the Bucs front office for the first round pick.
