Camp battle for back-up role?

This offseason, the Buccaneers extended third-string quarterback to a two-year deal and signed a former Arians backup in Blaine Gabbert. This has set up an interesting camp battle to see who will win the job as the backup quarterback behind Winston in 2019.

Gabbert, a former first round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011, has the bust label attached to him. He has been a serviceable backup quarterback throughout his career though, and this seems to be his niche.

Throughout his eight year career, Gabbert has started 48 games under center for the Jaguars and Cardinals, as well as the San Francisco 49ers, and the Tennessee Titans. He has completed 56 percent of his passes with 48 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.

He may also hold the advantage over Griffin as he has spent time with Arians in Arizona with the Cardinals and may have his trust to the keys of the offense should Winston go down with an injury. Griffin, while he has more time in Tampa Bay, has yet to see an NFL start and spent time as the third-stringer with Monken and former head coach Dirk Koetter.

While the job looks like Gabbert’s to lose, Griffin could still potentially win the backup job in Tampa Bay. Keep an eye on this battle as training camp rolls around.
