Question Five: The rookies

How do the rookies (White, Murphy-Bunting, Dean, Edwards) look thus far?

Answer: “All four will be a big part of the defense moving forward.”

Devin White:

"“Devin White, if anything, wasn’t in the spotlight that much because he stepped in right away, and was a big part of the defense right away… always working with the ones next to Lavonte David. You would see him a lot on special teams… A lot of the focus at OTAs and mini-camp was on the rookie DBs and how they might fit in”"

Sean-Murphy Bunting:

"“[Sean Murphy-Bunting] is a versatile guy and could very well be their nickel, and nickel could be on the field 65 to 70 percent of the plays on defense. He could be pushing for an outside corner job. We have seen [Vernon] Hargreaves and Carlton Davis as the guys lining up on the outside for the most part, whenever they are healthy, with the one defense.”"

Murphy-Bunting looks to continue to earn the trust and respect of Bowles and the Buccaneers’ coaching staff.

"“Right now you yield the depth chart to experience more than anything… we haven’t seen Murphy-Bunting working outside with the ones but we have seen him in the nickel.”"

The Buccaneers’ second rounder this year has been impressive to say the least.

"“Murphy-Bunting has made a lot of plays and looked the part. He has really stood out the most of the three DBs to this point.”"

Jamel Dean:

"“Jamel Dean is a guy that they like a lot. He’s almost exclusively going to be an outside corner… He is 6’2 and looks big and carries the size well. To be as tall as he is and to be a 4.3 40 guy is impressive. He is a guy that I think most teams were scared because of the knee, but to talk to him it is not even something that is in his consciousness as he goes through practice. He feels like he is healthy and good to go… we are three years in now with no setback.”"

Mike Edwards:

"“Mike Edwards can do a lot for this team. He could be the starting safety, he could be a part of the nickel package… Mike is a really smart guy who understands the defense.”"

The rookie defensive backs overall:

"“All three of the rookie DBs have been impressive, and have been exactly what the Bucs wanted them to be in terms of not only really fast, but really sharp kids that have picked things up well and taken big steps already.”"
