Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Evans restructures contract… again
By Cory Kinnan
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers now have about $3 million in cap space to play with after wide receiver Mike Evans restructures his contract.
For the second time this offseason, wide receiver Mike Evans has restructured his contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This time the move to re-work his massive deal with the team will result in a bump of $3.2 million in cap space for the Buccaneers.
Evans is still due the $20 million this year that was originally structured in his extension, but by making the move the Buccaneers may be able to add more depth to their lineup for the upcoming season. A win-win situation for both sides as the Buccaneers look to make a massive leap out of the basement of the NFC South this season.
While the Buccaneers had just enough cap space to sign Jamel Dean and Devin White, the two remaining unsigned draft picks, they now have the flexibility to go after a player or two still on the market. With injuries along the defensive front, a move there would not be surprising.
While this could be a precursor to another deal, it is more likely that the Bucs are just giving themselves some breathing room against the cap to potentially to make a move if necessary. However, the clearing of space is something to monitor moving closer to training camp in Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers are entering a make-or-break season.
The Bucs, for once, have some money to play with thanks to Evans and the savvy work of their finance team.Evans has been a gem to Tampa Bay and his willingness to restructure his deal is just another example of his commitment to the Buccaneers and his desire to win.
