The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announce this evening that they have released running back Shaun Wilson one year after he signed as an undrafted free agent.
Just a couple hours ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they had waived second year running back Shaun Wilson. Wilson was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Duke by the Buccaneers one year ago after a productive collegiate career.
During his college career Wilson tallied a total of nearly 2,500 yards and 18 touchdowns during four years as a contributor at Duke. He added 81 catches out of the backfield for 725 yards and six touchdowns as well. A dual-threat back, the Buccaneers had hoped to find a gem on the UDFA market.
Last season he totaled just six carries for 29 yards for the Buccaneers. He also caught three passes for five yards. He appeared in just five games for Tampa Bay in 2018 and will now be looking for a new home after today’s news.
Earlier this week, wide receiver Mike Evans restructured his contract, converting $4 million of his deal into a signing bonus and clearing just over $3 million in cap space for the Buccaneers. After the release of Wilson and the restructure, one must wonder if these are correlating moves.
After the cut of Wilson, the Buccaneers are now down to four running backs entering training camp at this point. Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones will lead the pack, while Dare Ogunbowale and Bruce Anderson will compete for a chance to make the roster in Tampa Bay.
Wilson is young, just entering his second season, so there is a great potential he will land on his feet elsewhere with a chance to compete for a roster spot. For now, the Buccaneers move on and could potentially have another move in the works.
