Jameis Winston has had a roller coaster of a career for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; as a result he has been ranked as the 27th best quarterback.

Chris Simms, former quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and now of Pro Football Talk, is going through a series of ranking the top 40 quarterbacks currently in the NFL. Jameis Winston comes in on his list as the 27th best quarterback, behind the likes of Nick Foles, Dak Prescott, Mitch Trubisky, and Josh Allen.

While Winston has struggled over the past two seasons, ranking him this low seems a bit harsh, especially considering the extraordinary passing numbers he posts. Yes, Winston throws a ton of interceptions, but also throws for thousands of yards and a good deal of touchdowns.

In nine games last year, Winston threw for nearly, 3000 yards and 19 touchdowns; yes, he also threw 14 interceptions. His adjusted stats over 16 games would have come out to over 5,300 yards, nearly 34 touchdowns, and just under 25 interceptions. The interception numbers could have been less, but throwing for 5,300 yards and 34 touchdowns can cover a multitude of sins.

Pro Football Focus (subscription required) believes that Winston could contend for a passing title in 2019 if he stays healthy, uninvolved in off-the-field issues, and takes to heart the coaching of Bruce Arians and Byron Leftwich. In his contract year, Winston has no choice but to put it all together or look for a new place to play football in 2020.

The talent is there for the former first overall pick back in 2015, but it has all been between the ears for Winston; should Arians and Leftwich unlock the potential of him, then he will be ranked much higher than 27th on the list next year. Keep an eye on Winston and his development as the summer progresses into the season.
