Coaching staff of Tampa Bay Buccaneers is criminally underrated
By Cory Kinnan
Bruce Arians has taken over the reigns of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and brought with him Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwich, yet they are listed as 18th best.
In what world do the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans have a better coaching staff than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? According to Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport, a coaching staff with experience such as Bruce Arians, Todd Bowles, and Harold Goodwin still ranks in the bottom half of the league as the 18th best coaching staff.
All offseason the Bucs’ coaching staff has been receiving praise for already shifting the culture that has infiltrated the Tampa Bay locker room over the past few years under former head coach Dirk Koetter. Not only that, but Arians is a two-time Coach of the Year in the NFL and brought along a defensive coordinator with head coaching experience in Bowles as well.
Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, although he only has a half of a season as a coordinator under his belt, is already receiving praise from around the league and being pegged as a “rising star.” Yet a third-year head coach with unknown coordinators is ranked above this loaded staff? Bill O’Brien, who keeps getting general managers fired is ranked above the Buccaneers’ coaching staff?
Davenport does admit, “All in all, this ranking might be a little low.” He would be correct there. It would not be a shock to see Arians have this team with a record close to .500 this year in his first-year leading a franchise that has been dysfunctional over the past few years.
Bottom line: The Buccaneers will not get the respect around the league until they earn it, and they have done very little to earn that respect as of late. Arians, Bowles, Leftwich, and Goodwin look to put Tampa Bay back on the map and out of the NFC South basement in 2019.
