Defensive Line

Even shallower than the Buccaneers’ offensive line is the depth along the defensive line in Tampa Bay. Outside of last year’s first round pick Vita Vea and new Buccaneer Ndamukong Suh, the Buccaneers are going to have to work hard to find a third starter this season; not to mention Suh is on just a one-year deal as well.

Currently behind these two guys on the defensive line are Beau Allen, William Gholston, Rakeem Nunez-Roches, and seventh round pick Terry Beckner. Gholston has the most experience starting, but struggled mightily last season and may find himself on the bubble heading into training camp. Not to mention Jason Pierre-Paul; will he ever return to full strength?

Even though the Buccaneers used a first round pick on a defensive tackle just two drafts ago, they may be in a position to do so again in 2020. After this season, Vea may be the only viable starter along the defensive line. While the Buccaneers will have some spending flexibility next summer, the draft may be the best option.

Some names to watch in college this season include Iowa’s A.J. Epenesa, Auburn’s Derrick Brown, and Alabama’s Raekwon Davis. Hopefully one of the current depth pieces along the defensive line can step up for the Buccaneers, but they should prepare to address the position next offseason well in advance.
