Jameis Winston predicted to be tagged by Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston is entering a crucial year as he plays out the last season of his rookie contract; how will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers proceed after 2019?

NFL Spin Zone’s Randy Gurzi recently took to the task of predicting the final outcomes of all of the quarterbacks entering “prove it” years in 2019. Making the list was Jameis Winston who is in the last year of his rookie deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in need of a consistent year.

According to Gurzi, he predicts that Winston will play well enough to earn the trust of the Buccaneers for just one more year as they will utilize the franchise tag on him. This is the route Washington took with Kirk Cousins, and it could be the route the Buccaneers choose to take with Winston as he has not earned the trust to receive a long term deal.

"“This season will be huge for Winston’s career as he looks to become the first ever Bucs quarterback to get a second contract. Helping him will be new head coach Bruce Arians who has a history of getting the most out of his quarterbacks. If anyone can help him take the next step, this seems like the guy” (Gurzi via NFL Spin Zone)."

The pros of tagging Winston for the Buccaneers would be to allow themselves another year to put together more than one consistent year in a row, which he has yet to do. It would also allow for them to possibly prep for the future without going completely into a rebuild mode.

The cons of tagging Winston could be that he could pull a Le’Veon Bell maneuver and decide not to sign the tag, sit out, and demand a trade. This would inevitably leave the Buccaneers without a quarterback after the 2019 season.

It is more likely that the Buccaneers will give Winston a long term deal if he even plays a hair consistent as it is hard to find quarterbacks in the NFL. While they are completely unwilling to re-sign him before the season due to his inconsistent play to this point, Winston has a chance to earn a massive paycheck if he puts it all together in 2019.
