As Justin Evans sits out and recovering from a foot injury, the other safeties on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are taking advantage of their time on the field.

Two years ago the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made safety Justin Evans their second round selection out of Texas A&M. After he put together a solid rookie campaign for the pewter and red, Evans took a step back in year-two in 2018, a year that ultimately ended in a season ending foot injury.

Fast forward to today, and Evans has yet to practice with the Buccaneers through more than a week of camp. Not only is Evans missing valuable time on the field in practice, but he is missing opportunities to prove himself to a new defensive coordinator that rookie Mike Edwards is taking advantage of.

Edwards was just one of three defensive backs drafted by the Buccaneers this year, they signed former Green Bay Packers’ starting safety Kentrell Brice, and still have Jordan Whitehead, a sixth round pick from a year ago. The safety group that struggled mightily in 2018 all of a sudden has become rather deep.

While Evans was penciled in as a starting safety for the Buccaneers, that status now hangs in the balance as Edward, Whitehead, and Brice have been performing well to this point in camp. If Evans does lose the starting job due to inactivity, the Buccaneers find themselves in a predicament, but this time around trying to solve a good problem.
