3 unheralded Buccaneers standouts vs. Steelers
By Cory Kinnan
CB Mazzi Wilkins
In a potential hometown feel-good story, undrafted free agent cornerback Mazzi Wilkins, signed by the Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent out of Tampa’s University of South Florida.
Wilkins has been consistently getting his hands on football in practice, and that knack for forcing turnovers did not stop in live action as Wilkins forced a fumble late in the game as the Buccaneers were battling for a victory. In addition to the strip, Wilkins finished the game with two solo tackles.
In his four years playing football in Tampa Bay before coming to the Buccaneers, Wilkins recorded three total interceptions and 19 passes defended. He also tallied half of a sack and a tackle and a half for loss playing for the Bulls.
The cornerback group is deep with the additions of Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting in this year’s draft. This adds to a group already containing Carlton Davis, M.J. Stewart and Vernon Hargreaves III, but there is one spot left open. After the suspension for the first four games of the season of Ryan Smith, Wilkins has a chance to battle for that cornerback spot on the roster.
