CB Mazzi Wilkins

One of the better stories on the Buccaneers’ roster this offseason is undrafted cornerback Mazzi Wilkins. A hometown kid, Wilkins played his college ball right here in Tampa at the University of South Florida, and now has a chance to make the Buccaneers final 53-man roster.

Early on this offseason, Wilkins was a ball hawk in practice and on the field in the preseason. He forced a fumble late in the first preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers as the Buccaneers were attempting to seal a game late, and it seemed like he had an interception in almost every practice.

Due to the suspension of veteran Ryan Smith, Wilkins may have a better shot at making the roster as the fifth and final cornerback behind Vernon Hargreaves III, Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Jamel Dean. Wilkins’ roster spot may depend on how the Buccaneers list M.J. Stewart as a cornerback or a safety.

If Stewart is listed as a safety, then Wilkins could land on the roster as the fifth cornerback. If listed as a cornerback, then Wilkins’ best chance at making the Buccaneers is if they roster six cornerbacks. Keep an eye on the hometown kid as he scratches and claws for a spot on the Buccaneers tonight against the Cowboys.
