Mock Draft Monday: Buccaneers no longer in need of a QB?
By Cory Kinnan
5.136 Alohi Gilman, S, Notre Dame
The injuries to the Buccaneers’ safety group are well documented as Orion Stewart was waived with a torn ACL, Justin Evans and D’Cota Dixon were placed on injured reserve, and rookie Mike Edwards has been dinged up this summer as well. The Buccaneers add some depth and a potential special teams contributor here in the fifth round with Notre Dame safety Alohi Gilman.
A Navy transfer, Gilman is entering his second season with the Fighting Irish after starting as a freshman with the Midshipman. Last year Gilman totaled three tackles for loss and 58 solo tackles for the Notre Dame defense, adding two interceptions, a forced fumble, and five passes defended as well.
As a freshman with Navy, Gilman recorded five passes defended, a forced fumble, five tackles for loss, and 50 solo tackles; thus far through his 2019 campaign, he has totaled seven solo tackles, one forced fumble, and one pass defended. Gilman has the ability to play in the box or over the top, giving defensive coordinator Todd Bowles flexibility in how to deploy him
While Jordan Whitehead has been a surprisingly solid contributor for the Bucs this year, they need more depth behind him and Edwards besides a 30 year old veteran in Darian Stewart. Gilman gives the Buccaneers this much needed depth at just the cost of a day-three pick.
