Devin White can’t stay on the field and looks like a bust
It is a fact that this writer was not a fan of the Devin White selection with the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft as linebackers are not game-changing positions like pass rushers are. Josh Allen should have been the pick that the Buccaneers should have made as the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns both found starting rookie linebackers in the fifth round.
This does not mean White is a bust. He was given a limited amount of snaps this preseason to preserve him for the regular season, played through a sickness in week one, and hurt his knee early in week two, keeping him out week three.
In the meantime it will be veteran Kevin Minter filling in for White next to Lavonte David in the middle of the Bucs’ defense. White’s knee injury was not expected to be significant, so hopefully a long week plus one game was enough rest for the fifth overall pick of the Buccaneers.
White deserves the chance to see the field on a consistent basis before any strong opinions should be formed about him, and this is coming from one of the biggest cynics of his selection. Hopefully the Buccaneers can get White back for this brutal travel schedule of six straight road games, starting with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
