A deeper dive

Now taking a look at Football Outsiders, who track DVOA (basically the rate of successful plays the player is responsible for above the league average), we will look at an analytical approach to Winston and his 2019 season. Through five games, the returns are pretty admirable for Winston, but there is definitely room to move upward.

In DVOA, Winston ranks as the tenth best quarterback in the league this season, directly behind Carson Wentz and Jimmy Garoppolo and in front of Jacoby Brissett and Matt Ryan. On the season, Winston has found himself responsible for just above 10 percent more successful plays than the median around the rest of the league.

According to Football Outsider’s QBR, Winston has the 13th highest rating, sandwiched between Deshaun Watson and Phillip Rivers. Regardless of previous performances in past season, being in the company of Watson and Rivers is a fairly good sign for Winston.

Finally, Football Outsiders also measures DYAR, which seeks to attempt to analyze a player’s overall value. When analyzing Winston’s value, Football Outsiders ranks the Bucs’ signal caller as the tenth most valuable quarterback in the league. In both DVOA and DYAR, Winston falls as the tenth quarterback in the league, giving a pretty good indication of who he is: an upper-third quarterback in the NFL.

*Since posting this article, FO has updated their rankings. Winston now falls 14th in DYAR and 15th in DVOA.
