ComPewter Analysis: a deeper look at Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston
By Cory Kinnan
Summary
Overall, Winston has put himself in the conversation to be considered a top-ten quarterback in the league with his play so far. Considering his numbers may also be a little lopsided due to his struggles in the first game of the season, Winston has all of the potential to continue to climb in these rankings.
In the midst of the best year of his career, Winston is on pace for nearly 4,400 yards on the season and 35 touchdowns; he is also on pace for 16 interceptions, but again these numbers are skewed a bit. Should he throw just two picks every four games for the rest of the season, then he will finish with just 11 interceptions on the year, a huge improvement from a year ago.
While the black and white numbers in the box score would indicate that Winston could be a top five quarterback, the analytics paint a better picture of a quarterback who has had his conservative moments. Moving forward the Buccaneers should give Winston a better system to operate in that caters to his strengths.
In his contract year, Jameis Winston is playing well enough to earn a long term deal to remain in Tampa for the foreseeable future. Winston’s issue, however, has been consistency; while he has shown consistent efforts over the past four weeks, it is up to him to prove to the Buccaneers that he can be depended upon as the quarterback of their future.
