ComPewter Analysis: Chris Godwin atop every WR ranking for Buccaneers
By Cory Kinnan
A few last words
The Buccaneers’ offense currently ranks fourth in points per game and seventh in passing yards per game. With targets like Evans and Godwin, now among the league’s best, it is no wonder the Bucs have been able to find room to throw.
Godwin and Mike Evans have the same amount of targets, but Evans only has 27 catches for 464 yards and four touchdowns. Because of Evans’ known playmaking ability, opposing defenses are having to choose to take one or the other, leaving Godwin in favorable matchups.
What does this mean moving forward? Either defenses are going to be continuously shredded by either Godwin or Evans on a weekly basis, or they are going to leave the middle of the field exposed in order to shadow both of the Buccaneer receivers on the outside. This could mean a third receiving option, presumably tight end O.J. Howard could emerge in the final ten games of the season.
No matter how you cut it, either by looking at the analytics or just the black and white numbers, Chris Godwin remains not only an elite receiver, but as the best receiver in the league this season. Not only is he the best receiver in the league in 2019, but Godwin is by far the best receiver in the league thus far.
