LSU QB Joe Burrow

It may be far too early to be looking toward the draft, but IF (and it is a very big if) the Buccaneers let Jameis walk in free agency then they will most likely fill their quarterback hole with a drafted player over a bridge player. The 2020 draft is filled with some very talented quarterbacks and some others that don’t have enough film yet, but could pan out to be solid NFL-caliber players.

The rumors have been swirling that Bruce Arians is a big fan of quarterback Joe Burrow from LSU. Burrow has watched his draft stock rise all season and has found himself in contention for the Heisman trophy and a shot at the National Championship.

Burrow has been a massive part of a revitalized LSU offense that has started to become more pass-oriented and takes shots early and often. Over seven games Burrow has 2,484 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and only three interceptions. Burrow has put a sizable amount of distance between his stats and those of Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa, and Justin Herbert, two of which will almost assuredly be drafted in the first round and Lawrence who has had a slow start to the season but will most likely stay at Clemson for one more year.

Burrow is extremely talented and should be able to work well in a Bruce Arians-led offense. There will likely be a learning curve but Burrow has shown that he has the arm strength, ability to improvise (which is good considering the Bucs are mostly stuck with their offensive line), and is able to make quick reads in the pocket.

Of the quarterbacks in the draft it appears that the likelihood of Burrow being available when the Bucs have a pick is the greatest. The Bucs did not bring Bruce Arians on for a rebuild which makes the Bucs using a draft pick on a quarterback unlikely, but this seems like a more likely scenario than the Bucs simply utilizing a mediocre bridge quarterback for year.
