7 cornerbacks Buccaneers could target in 2020 free agency
By Cory Kinnan
The Buccaneers secondary is in shambles as they have the 32nd ranked pass defense. Instead of drafting more cornerbacks, here are seven they could sign.
Even after five cornerbacks have been drafted in the first three rounds since 2016, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a bleeding secondary. Here is a thought: instead of using more draft assets on the cornerback position, why not sign a proven one instead?
This is surprisingly a fairly deep class of cornerbacks to pick from in the 2020 free agent pool this offseason. It seems like a difficult path for former first rounder Vernon Hargreaves to be back in Tampa next year as the Buccaneers can save nearly $10 million if they choose to part ways with him.
Overall, the Buccaneers are expected to have over $80 million in cap space this offseason to spend. Above all else on the open market, a proven, veteran cornerback should be the top priority of general manager Jason Licht and the Bucs.
With Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean waiting in the wings, the one mistake the Bucs made was not having a veteran presence on the roster at the cornerback position that they could learn from instead of being thrown into the fire (in SMB’s case). While Carlton Davis has proven to be a solid defender, the Bucs should look to drastically improve their secondary this offseason.
Here are the top seven cornerbacks set to hit the open market this upcoming offseason.
