4 truths about Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston

He has not earned a long term extension
Here is one simple question that must be asked: if Winston is worth giving a long term deal to, then why haven’t the Buccaneers given him that deal yet? In today’s NFL, quarterbacks such as Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, drafted a year after Winston, have already received new deals prior to their contract year.
Yet here Winston is, six games into his contract year without a new deal. With over $80 million in cap space in 2020 and beyond, lack of funds is not the reason, but rather that the franchise is still undecided as to whether or not they can trust the future of the Buccaneers to Winston. The former first overall pick still has ten games to change the minds of the front office, but there are already rumors that they are “resetting their sights” at the quarterback position.
Not to mention Winston has already been involved in three off-the-field instances going back to his days at Florida State as well. Both on and off the field, Winston has not been consistent enough for the Buccaneers to invest their future into him.
At this point it looks like Jameis Winston’s best bet is to hope to be franchise tagged by the Bucs, as this would bide him another year to attempt to win over their long term trust. For right now, it is pretty simple: Winston does not have a new deal, because he has not proven to the Bucs that he is worthy of a long term deal.
