ComPewter Analysis: Jameis Winston at the midway of Buccaneers season
By Cory Kinnan
A few final thoughts
It seems that the box score numbers and the analytical data are on the same page here with Winston: he is a highly unpredictable passer, and right now ranks slightly below the league average across the board.
What does this mean for both Winston and the Bucs? It honestly all comes down to dollar signs at this point for both sides. How much can Winston truly ask for on his next contract from the Buccaneers or another team should the pewter and red decide to move on? How much are the Bucs willing to pay Winston at this point given his track record of inconsistent play?
The former Heisman Trophy winner is going to provide games like he played against the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams, but will also give you games like that against the San Francisco 49ers and Carolina Panthers. However, balancing his highs and lows, Winston has not proven to be anything more than right around the league’s average at the end of the first four seasons.
Winston’s 2019 season has only made his outlook beyond 2019 even cloudier for both him and the Buccaneers. He has eight games left to prove to the Bucs that he has any ounce of consistency within him, and Licht and Arians have that same amount of time to continue to evaluate Winston to see if he will be their quarterback of the future.
