Another year, another day-two pick on a cornerback. While the Buccaneers keep taking cornerbacks in the second and third round of drafts, they also keep missing on the ones they take. They cut former first rounder in Vernon Hargreaves, 2018 second rounder M.J. Stewart has been inactive quite a bit, and 2019 second rounder Sean Murphy-Bunting is taking quite a few growing pains this season.
Carlton Davis has been a consistent performer at one cornerback spot for the pewter and red this year, but opposite him has been an absolute mess. Hargreaves, Murphy-Bunting, and 2019 third rounder Jamel Dean have all gave it a shot. Dean has performed the best of the three, yet the Buccaneers did not play him a single defensive snap in yesterday’s loss to the Saints.
Cameron Dantzler from Mississippi State presents a ton of appeal for a mid-round pick: long and fast. At 6-2 and 185 pounds, Dantzler has the build of a cornerback who is equipped to matchup with the likes of Michael Thomas and Julio Jones in the NFC South.
This season, Dantzler has picked off two passes, defended an additional seven passes, forced a fumble, and has even made a play behind the line of scrimmage for the Bulldogs. A press man cornerback, Dantzler brings the style of defensive play that defensive coordinator Todd Bowles has seemed to turn towards.
