In Buccaneer Quarterback Jameis Winston’s case, “Hope Floats”
By JD Stenger
During the first half of 2019 Bruce Arians went out of his way in post game press conferences to defend his quarterback-throwing other players under the bus to stave off criticism of his quarterback. Over the last half of the year, he completely abandoned the stand up for Jameis routine. He began to state things as they were, or he tried to avoid the questions all-together. Towards the end of the season he was asked what Winston’s future was in Tampa.
His reply was very noncommittal and differed from his previous responses to similar questions. That answer would have been just fine and dandy had he not answered with a much more committed response to the future with Shaquil Barrett the week before.
I think Bruce Arians became flustered with Jameis and lost his patience with him not long after the “Torture at Tottenham” (the horrible loss in London to the Panthers). I think that Arians taught and showed Winston how to cut back on his interceptions to little success.
I think he came to a point where he said to himself: I can’t do anything with this kid. This is why it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bucs bring in Philip Rivers in a huge cost saving move and draft a quarterback. This to me would be the best move for the Bucs. It’s very clear that the only thing that his fans and One Buc are counting on is hope. Concerning Jameis Winston and the rumors, it appears “hope floats.”
