Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Offseason plan to make the playoffs
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers need to be ruthless with their free agents this offseason and measure the effectiveness of a player against their overall price. The Bucs could save potential cap space to sign more important free agents at greater positions of need.
The biggest free agents that the Bucs need to let walk are Ndamukong Suh and Breshad Perriman. While these moves may not be popular, both of these players would be easy to replace and the Bucs can’t afford to pay them as much as their market would garner.
Suh was a member of the best run defense in 2019 but his role was not vital. Suh performed slightly above mediocre both based on the eye test and through analytics other than a few touchdowns and it wouldn’t be hard to find a cheaper replacement that could sign a long-term contract.
Perriman exploded onto the scene at the end of the season and performed at an extremely high level but he will likely demand double what the Bucs can reasonably pay a WR3.
Chris Godwin and Mike Evans are the central receivers on the Buccaneers and the team doesn’t have enough cap space to pay their third receiver when they have cheaper options already on the roster.
While not as important as the other two, the Buccaneers also need to let Peyton Barber walk this offseason. Ronald Jones can’t come into his own if he is constantly splitting reps with Barber. The Bucs can find a change of pace back in one of the later rounds of the draft who can give Rojo a break while not needing to fully split reps.
The final free agent that the Buccaneers should not re-sign is Demar Dotson. Dotson is just far too old, expensive, and didn’t play at a high level in 2019. The Bucs could find a better and more consistent player in the draft with the plethora of talented tackles.
