Many Bucs fans questioned the team drafting a second cornerback in the 2019 NFL Draft when the Bucs took Jamel Dean in the third round.

This may have seemed puzzling at the moment, but Dean showed enough upside during his rookie season to have fans excited for his future as a Buccaneer.

Dean’s entire rookie season was a roller coaster with high-highs and low-lows in almost every game.

While some fans could be quick to question why Dean was taken after some mistakes were made (such as getting beaten far too much in his first start versus Seattle), this is not entirely uncommon for rookie corners. It takes time to get used to the speed of the NFL.

Despite any early failures, Dean persevered and was rewarded for his effort. Jamel Dean played at an exceptional pace and could have led the league in passes defended if the Bucs gave him two or three more starts.

For now, it appears as though Dean and fellow rookie Sean Murphy-Bunting are competing for the second corner spot, even though this trio will likely spend a large percentage of the defensive snaps on the field together.

Jamel Dean’s ceiling is incredibly high in 2020 and the Buccaneers could see a rookie with heart from 2019 transform into a top-tier corner.
