Buccaneers: Jameis Winston signing with Saints spells trouble for Tampa
Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston is finalizing a deal that would send him to the New Orleans Saints for the 2020 season.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers elected to part ways with QB Jameis Winston after seasons with him at the helm during the 2020 offseason.
Instead, the Buccaneers chose to bring in 43-year-old veteran Tom Brady to play the position as he will provide much-needed leadership and potentially a consistency that wasn’t seen from Winston during his time with Tampa Bay.
Winston has been seeking opportunities to sign a contract and continue his football career elsewhere for the better part of a month now and it seems he finally has his match.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Winston is finalizing a one-year deal that will send him the New Orleans Saints.
That certainly isn’t ideal for the Buccaneers.
Winston showed potential on-the-field and he was a great part of the Tampa Bay community off-the-field during his time with the franchise. No one should be wishing him ill-will for pursuing an opportunity to continue his professional football career.
But the last place that any Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan should have wanted Winston to end was in New Orleans.
The Bucs’ main competition in the NFC South division this season is none other than New Orleans. The Saints are considered one of the favorites to win the NFC and the last thing they need is more help.
Even though Winston’s time on the field will likely be small- barring an unforeseen injury- where he will help is in game-planning. He will now be able to help the Saints break down tendencies of Tampa Bay players. He’ll be able to share invaluable knowledge for New Orleans as they try to stay ahead of the competition in the division.
In addition to what he can now provide for the Saints in the film room against the Bucs, he will also be learning under Drew Brees. If there was ever a quarterback not named Tom Brady who could become a teacher to Winston to help him in growing in his game, it’s probably Brees.
Other than whatever salary cap hit it will take, this is a no-lose move for the Saints, but it certainly doesn’t help the Buccaneers in any way, shape or form moving forward.
