Having a solid third-down back is extremely important in the modern NFL, especially for a team that throws the ball as much as the Buccaneers. While needing the ability to threaten the run, this player also has to be able to catch and block very well.

Dare Ogunbowale played the third-down role for the Buccaneers admirably in 2019, but he left something to be desired with the ball in his hands. Ke’Shawn Vaughn is going to bring much more to the table in 2020.

Tampa Bay shocked the fanbase with their selection of Vaughn in the third round of the draft. While he was not as well-known as his counterparts, Vaughn’s college film shows that he has found a great fit in Tampa Bay.

Vaughn is an excellent blocker for third and long scenarios, is a far more explosive runner than Ogunbowale, and his ability as a pass-catcher has the potential to be greater as well.

Ogunbowale and Vaughn will likely battle it out for third-down duties during camp, but based on his draft status and talents, it appears as though the advantage goes to Vaughn.

With the RB2 likely going to one of the above players, Raymond Calais and T.J. Logan are left to battle it out for the third spot and return man duties on special teams. Both of these players are similar in their skillsets; fast and elusive, but are slightly undersized to be an every-down back in the NFL.

Regardless of how many running backs the Bucs plan to keep on their roster, it seems likely that these two will be battling it out for the final spot on the roster. Their talents are too similar to warrant keeping both, but either player could stand to find success as a developmental back in Bruce Arians’ offense.
