The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their starter at quarterback, but could they build depth at the position by signing the biggest free-agent remaining?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have their starter at quarterback in Tom Brady coming into the 2002 season.

The Buccaneers have an opportunity to compete for a postseason bid for the first time in 12 seasons and it’s clear that they’re making all the moves possible to do just that.

Though Tampa Bay already signed Blaine Gabbert and undrafted free-agent Reid Sinnett, but it might not be the worst idea for them to take a look at potentially signing another quarterback: Former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton.

Just a few seasons ago, Newton was considered the top quarterback in the league by many. He was tearing up opposing defenses on his way to an MVP Award.

Now, Newton is struggling to find a team. Similar to Jameis Winston, it seems that his only option at this point may be taking a backup QB role on a franchise with the hopes of proving himself and eventually finding his way back to a starter role.

Could the Buccaneers be that team?

If we learned anything from the Saints’ signing of Winston, it’s clear that anything is possible. Though many analysts estimated that Winston could make upwards of $20 million heading into the 2020 offseason, the quarterback ended up taking a backup QB with the Saints for less than $2 million a year.

If the same were true with Cam Newton, that could give the Bucs a guy with great experience, high upside and a solid backup option for Tom Brady if something were to happen. Not only would it give the Bucs an excellent ‘Plan B,’ Tampa Bay would also have a quarterback in the film room who has seen the NFC South defenses for several years now.

It’s not likely to happen, but it would be interesting to see Newton play backup to Brady and give the Bucs a quality depth option at the quarterback position.
