The 5 most important players for the Buccaneers in 2020
By Rob Leeds
Tristan Wirfs
The first-round draft pick for the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tristan Wirfs brings big make or break implications to his first professional role.
Tampa Bay knows how important it will be to keep Tom Brady protected in his first season, and they were willing to trade up in the draft to secure Wirfs.
Wirfs was the fourth offensive tackle taken off the board, but his level of success in his first season has the potential to be the highest of the group. He certainly has the athleticism to be dominant at the next level, but translating that to game situations will be pivotal.
If Wirfs can adequately protect Tom Brady, the Buccaneer offense has the potential to be the most dangerous in the NFL. If Wirfs struggles in his first season, there is a great chance that Tom Brady’s stats may not be as good as usual.
Jameis Winston was often forced to run for his life to extend plays after an edge rusher immediately broke through the offensive line. Brady doesn’t have the athleticism at this point (or any point) of his career to play behind a lousy line as Winston did in 2019.
This may seem like a lot of pressure for a rookie, but all eyes will be on Tristan Wirfs this upcoming season, just like all the other stars on the Buccaneers. There may be a slight learning curve, but Wirfs will have to learn fast if he wants Tampa Bay to have the best chance of winning in his rookie season.
