Cornerback
For the first time in years, the outlook is actually positive for the Buccaneer secondary in 2020, starting with the corners. Tampa Bay has three starting-caliber corners, but the difficult decision will be whittling that number down to two.
Carlton Davis, Sean Murphy-Bunting, and Jamel Dean all made separate convincing cases for being the starters last season. Several lineups will use all three of these options, but defining the rank order for the depth chart is essential.
Davis was the most consistent of the group and likely has the least to worry about. SMB and Dean both had their share of high and low moments, which makes it challenging to determine which one is the clear better option.
Moving into the training camp and the preseason, all three of these players will be held under a microscope. The smallest mistakes could be the difference in starting or playing as the nickel back.
Prediction: Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean win the starting jobs. Both players are great in press coverage and can excel in physical man situations. SMB will still have a good season, but his skill set is better suited to being the go-to in all nickel sets, which should still see the trio on the field for the majority of defensive reps.
