D.J. Swearinger

The Buccaneers are going into the 2020 season with fingers crossed that they can finally find their starting strong safety. Antoine Winfield Jr. looks set to lock up the free safety role, but the Bucs are still looking for a perfect fit for in the box.

If Tampa Bay still feels unsure about the position after this season and doesn’t want to break the bank, bringing back D.J. Swearinger could be a perfect move.

Able to play both safety roles, Swearinger has experienced a successful NFL career despite bouncing around the league. Over seven years, Swearinger has played for six different teams and has posted 14 interceptions, nine forced fumbles, and 42 passes defended.

Many Bucs fans were hoping that Tampa Bay would sign Swearinger to compete for a staring role this season, but the veteran safety signed with New Orleans instead.

While he wasn’t great in his short stint with the Buccaneers, Swearinger is a very talented player and is capable of winning a starting spot on the current Buccaneer roster.

Swearinger could be a viable option for the Bucs to investigate if there are still struggles from the safety position in 2021 once his one-year contract in New Orleans is up.
