Shady should easily win the third-down job

The third-down running back may be one of the most important offensive positions for the Bucs this year. Tom Brady loves playing with a back with hands, and McCoy currently looks like the best option.

As a pure runner, Rojo will be called upon for the early downs, and this usage will likely rule him out from taking most of the passing downs. Ke’Shawn Vaughn may be used here, but it appears as though his role is currently as a safe backup for Jones. Dare Ogunbowale may have looked like the lock to earn this job, but McCoy complicates things.

There is little reason to expect that Shady won’t end up on the final roster. With Jones and Vaughn also apparently safe, the Bucs likely won’t have space or the need to keep any other backs on the roster.

McCoy has the track record, experience, and talent, and Ogunbowale will fight an uphill battle if he hopes to keep his spot on the team.

Regardless of his lack of experience in the scheme, Shady is one of the best pass-catching backs of the past decade, and his explosive ability with the ball in his hands makes him the prime candidate to be the third running back on the roster in 2020.
