New Orleans Saints are saving the Buccaneers with Taysom Hill
By Rob Leeds
Bucs fans should cross their fingers
Nothing that the Saints could do would be better for the Bucs than extending Taysom Hill based on his current performance. The New Orleans offense is less threatening through the air than ever before at the benefit of a slightly improved quarterback ground game.
If New Orleans decides that Hill is their guy, he will ultimately have to change the way he plays. No more lowering your shoulder on hits, less quarterback power, and far more passes. Hill has not proven that he can carry this workload, and the Saints appear blind to this fact.
To make matters worse for New Orleans, if they promote Hill and Brees retires, Jameis Winston will have no reason to stay put. There are plenty of other teams where coaches don’t have weird attachments to gadget players where he can earn some playing time.
The Saints will be left with Hill and no other option, and that decision could be the most considerable gamble of Sean Payton’s career. If it works and Hill thrives, he is a genius. If it doesn’t work, the entire football world will wonder why Payton didn’t see what it saw.
The Saints are one of the best teams on paper in the league this year, but next season could see a change. New Orleans should be well over the cap space and will have to make a change. This roster turnover mixed with a dangerous gamble could be all that it takes for the Buccaneers to regain control of the NFC South going forward.
