What the numbers say

The transitive property is a dangerous concept in sports. A team beating a common opponent means very little when the rubber meets the road. The NFL is a fickle league, and a team that heats up at the right time can beat anyone. With that being said, the common opponent argument is very much in the Buccaneers’ favor.

The Buccaneers and WFT played four common opponents, and the results aren’t even close.

Washington lost two games against the Giants while the Buccaneers escaped a resurgent Giant comeback with a win. The WFT also lost close games against the Panthers and the Lions, two teams that the Buccaneers easily dominated.

The one common result was against the Rams, where both teams lost. On paper, with wins and losses, the Buccaneers get the advantage.

Next, let’s look at how these teams have fared against teams at or above and below .500.

The Buccaneers finished the season 9-0 against teams that ended the season below .500. Tampa Bay went 2-5 against teams that finished the season at or above this threshold. Fortunately, Washington finished the season in the first group, if that is any consolation for Bucs fans.

In the same categories, Washington went 6-4 against the weaker set of teams, and they were 0-6 against the better opponents. If the Buccaneers are considered “pretenders” against the successful teams, we don’t want to get into Washington too much. But unfortunately for Washington, we still haven’t look at Tom Brady yet.
