At this point, the Buccaneers need to write Jason Licht a blank check.
After years of mediocrity, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back on top of the NFL, and a large part of that success stems from one of the best front offices in the league. A great head coach like Bruce Arians and a cap wizard like Mike Greenberg are great places to start, but a strong general manager like Jason Licht has potentially paid off the most.
Licht hasn’t been perfect during his time in Tampa, but overall, this addition has been one of the number one reasons why the Buccaneers are where they are at today.
Without Licht, there would be no Arians, no Tom Brady, no stellar recent draft classes, and certainly no Super Bowl ring.
While there were some less than stellar draft classes and picks, specifically with kickers, Licht has also signed the greatest free agent of all time, brought a Hall of Fame coach out of retirement, found draft gems like Chris Godwin and Carlton Davis, and built a roster that was able to win the Super Bowl without jeopardizing the future.
Regardless of your personal opinions of players and other roster decisions, you can’t argue with the results; the Bucs are the top team in the NFL right now, and it doesn’t look like that is going to change any time soon.
An extension simply makes sense for a manager like Licht, especially when considering his recent draft classes and player acquisitions. From 2018 to 2020, the Buccaneers have been excellent in the draft room, and a considerable part of that falls back on Licht and the people he puts in charge.
In addition to great draft classes, the Bucs have been excellent at keeping their talented free agents on team-friendly deals while letting unnecessary players walk.
It may be a bit soon to start considering statues or any other grandiose gestures for a current GM, but none of the recent success would have come to pass if it wasn’t for Licht, and the team is in good hands as long as is he in control.
