The quarterback depth for the Buccaneers is a mess

The Buccaneer depth chart at quarterback does little to reveal where the Buccaneers are heading with the position once the regular season starts. Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert are the obvious one and two, but after that, the water gets murky.

Ryan Griffin and Kyle Trask are “competing” for the final quarterback spot on the roster. This spot is mostly a formality, of course, especially when considering their main job is to carry Brady’s water, but there is still reason to speculate.

Trask looked like the obvious choice to be the third guy after the Bucs took him with a priority draft pick, but Griffin has been the much better quarterback during camp. Griffin won’t ever be a starter, and he makes much more sense as a practice squad player, but there is a way this season plays out where he actually makes the final roster and Trask spends a year on the practice squad.

Bruce Arians and the rest of the staff follow the “best player available” mentality to the letter, so Griffin balling out over the next few weeks and Trask struggling in live fire situations will make this decision even more challenging to project down the road.

Trask makes the most sense as the third guy, but Griffin is one of the best preseason quarterbacks ever, so maybe the case is not closed after all.
