Buccaneers: Don’t expect much on Odell Beckham Jr. front

Buccaneers fans shouldn’t get their hopes up about Odell Beckham Jr. 

The Odell Beckham Jr. sweepstakes is about to begin across the NFL as the former Browns wide receiver could clear waivers later today, but the odds of him landing with the Buccaneers are mostly non-existent.

Right off the bat, the Bucs still have the best wide receiver room when healthy in the NFL. Beckham could sign with any other team in the league and it wouldn’t be enough to put that receiver room over the top versus the Buccaneers.

Adding in a player like OBJ would make the talent greater, but it would likely hurt the team more in the long run. Getting reps for guys like Tyler Johnson, Scotty Miller, and Jaelon Darden should be a priority for this coaching staff, and giving those reps to Beckham helps only in the short term.

Regardless, Tampa already has the talent to win the Super Bowl with this roster as is, so making a crazy move like going after OBJ doesn’t dramatically change that prospect at all.

To make this signing even more unrealistic, there is little chance that OBJ would even want to sign in Tampa. The Bucs are Super Bowl contenders and still have the best quarterback in the league, but there just aren’t enough passes to go around to keep Odell happy.

The Bucs are lucky that all of their receivers have been able to feast in this offense, and adding a fourth player that needs a high volume of targets could complicate matters greatly.

The lack of opportunities in Tampa should keep OBJ far away, even if he is still one of the best wide receivers in the league. Beckham needs a team to earn a new contract with, and he won’t get that chance to prove himself on this roster.

While nothing is ever out of the question with this team, Bucs fans should probably not expect much on the Odell Beckham Jr. front.
