The Buccaneers could finally have their CB1 back.
Injuries have made 2021 a very difficult season for the Buccaneers. The loss of so many key players just may be the price to pay after facing such great luck on this front last season, and every team has to pay up eventually.
We’ll take the Super Bowl last season above anything, but it is a nice caveat that Tampa is still sitting at 8-3 despite facing some terrible injury luck this year.
No player has been a bigger loss for the Bucs this season than Carlton Davis. Davis was on the verge of earning a massive deal as one of the highest-paid corners in the sport after a great 2020 season, and his loss was felt in a huge way as Tampa struggled to find replacement corners every week.
A true CB1 is nearly impossible to replace, and while Jamel Dean did great in Davis’ absence, it will be nice to get one of the best corners in the NFL back if everything goes well for the rest of the week.
According to Davis in a quote Tweeted out by The Pewter Report, he is back and ready to go, and he seems like he doesn’t want to take any defensive reps off. Whether or not this actually happens remains to be seen, but it does seem very likely that Davis will at least be back for part of the game against the Falcons.
After cycling through nearly every practice squad player on the team and plenty of free agents, the Bucs were finally able to get Sean Murphy-Bunting and Jamel Dean back, and now Davis appears to be on his way back as well. This unit was dominant during the playoffs last year, and it will be nice to see them take the field again with Davis back.
The defensive struggles over the season have generally started and stopped with the secondary, but these problems should start to dissipate as soon as this talented group gets back up to playing speed.
