Buccaneers have another reason to avoid terrible trade option

Did the Buccaneers even really need another reason to avoid trading for Jimmy Garoppolo?

Of all the quarterback options the Buccaneers have for the 2022 season, San Francisco 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo might be the worst fit.

Jimmy G is too expensive, not good enough, and he would cost the Bucs too much draft capital. Not a great way to start negotiations.

The early Garoppolo prognostication started with one of the weakest arguments ever; he was drafted to follow Tom Brady in New England, so he should follow Tom Brady with the Buccaneers. Huh?

This line of reasoning never holds up when you actually evaluate Garoppolo’s level of play with Tom Brady’s. Brady has a better arm and can succeed in spite of the pieces around him. On the other hand, Jimmy G had one of the best head coaches in the league, an excellent defense, and an almost-perfect run game and he still didn’t win a Super Bowl.

A slightly above-average quarterback would have beaten the Rams and likely made the 49ers Super Bowl champions. There is a reason why San Francisco is more than happy to move on to Trey Lance.

Still, the 49ers are looking for any trade partners they can find, but Adam Schefter recently reported that Garoppolo has a surgery coming up that could hurt his value even more.

Why would a team want to trade for the 20th-best quarterback in the league that is going to be a question mark after a surgery like this? The answer is hopefully not the Buccaneers.

This move would be terrible for the Bucs before the surgery. The question about Garoppolo’s viability after that point only makes it even worse.

Jimmy G might be one of the only realistic trade options for the Buccaneers, but Tampa certainly doesn’t need to make this trade for the sole sake of getting better than what is currently on the roster.
