The Buccaneers could lose one of their four most important players if Carlton Davis walks in free agency. They would have to find a replacement in the draft.
Whether you agree that Carlton Davis is one of the best corners in the NFL or not, the CB1 is one of the most important players on any team like the Buccaneers that takes itself seriously as a contender.
Based on the fact that we haven’t seen a new deal for Chris Godwin yet, we are inching closer to a future where Tampa uses the franchise tag on Godwin to gain time to reach an agreement.
Should this come to pass, Carlton Davis’ future in Tampa becomes shaky. A top-tier corner reaching free agency will be a major misstep by an organization that has been excellent for the past few seasons, but this would be the class to spend draft picks on corners if the Bucs needed a replacement.
If Davis does walk in free agency, which is certainly within reason, the Buccaneers will then be in a spot where they have to use a priority pick to find a new starter for the future.
The good news for the Bucs is that this class has a lot of impressive names that should be available near where Tampa is picking.
Whether the Buccaneers look in the first round or on Day two, there are plenty of guys that have turned heads at the combine and in recent weeks. Pro Days will reveal a lot for the drill-specific corners, but Tampa can marry talent and value anywhere from the first round to the third.
There is almost no way that the big names are available into the 20s where the Bucs would be, but trading up for one of the top three guys or waiting for one of the deeper options in round two would guarantee another quality option to keep the secondary on track if Davis departs.
