Buccaneers can win free agency with one more signing
By Rob Leeds
The Buccaneers can round out their top free agency targets by re-signing Jordan Whitehead.
The Buccaneers have been killing it since last night. First Ryan Jensen, then Carlton Davis. You mix these two signings with Chris Godwin on the franchise tag and you have an excellent run at keeping some of the most important players at home. Surely Tom Brady had an impact on everything since last night.
Still, this offseason had potential to cripple the Bucs if they lost some of their key players, but some fine maneuvering by the front office has brought back most of the vital guys on excellent deals.
The only loss so far has been Alex Cappa, but that could actually work in Tampa’s favor going forward.
Now, the front office needs to turn their attention towards one more extremely important signing; Jordan Whitehead.
Jordan Whitehead keeps the Buccaneers defense going
The Bucs don’t have a mountain of cap space left, but they can pull off a few more deals to build this roster towards competing for another Super Bowl. Tampa would love to find another strong receiver, but that market has become far too pricey to compete in. However, the safety market may help the Bucs steal Whitehead back.
There isn’t a better way to put it; Jordan Whitehead is likely the most under-rated safety in the NFL. From seeing him in the playoffs to watching him single-handedly take over games on defense, few players on the Bucs have an impact like Whitehead.
There are also very few safeties in the league that are as versatile than Whitehead. The star Buccaneer safety can rush the passer, drop into coverage, and he is also one of the hardest hitters in the league.
The defense thrives off Whitehead’s energy, and letting him walk shouldn’t be in the plans.
The Bucs may like Mike Edwards in the event that Whitehead walks, but the three-safety looks work wonders for the Buccaneer defense. Having Whitehead opens up doors for Tampa that other safeties couldn’t dream of doing, and the rest of the league ignoring what he is putting on tape could help the Bucs from a money standpoint.
Tampa may like what they have now, but they aren’t done yet. The Buccaneers need Jordan Whitehead to stay competitive next season, and signing him as soon as possible is the easiest way to win free agency.
